Voting open for St. Albert's annual garbage can design contest

This year's theme is the “vital role of pollinators,” and there are over 17 entries to vote for.

Voting is underway for the City of St. Albert's annual garbage can design contest.

The contest features students from local elementary and junior high schools submitting painted garbage can designs inspired by a pre-selected theme.

This year's theme is the “vital role of pollinators,” and there are over 17 entries to vote for.

“Did you know that there are thousands of pollinators in Canada?,” the city's Cultivate the Conversation platform reads. “This includes butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds and over 800 species of native bees.”

“These essential creatures contribute to the rich biodiversity of our ecosystem and help ensure an abundance of food supply.”

The designs pining for votes include a garbage can painted like a can of Campbell's tomato soup by fourth grade students at Muriel Martin Elementary, an array of flower-filled designs by third grade students at Joseph M. Demko School and first graders and kindergartners at Neil M. Ross School, and much more.

Designers to receive the most votes will see their designs on garbage cans placed in parks and neighbourhoods throughout St. Albert. Last year's winners were a second grade art class at Lois E. Hole Elementary, a split third and fourth grade group from École Father Jan, and a kindergarten class from Wild Rose Elementary School.

Voting is open until May 10. To vote, visit the city's Cultivate the Conversation platform at www.conversation.stalbert.ca
